We recommend contacting the centre or visiting the website before your visit especially outside of the summer season. Recommended for walking, running, biking (you can hire a bike if you don’t have your own with you) tree surfing (if you are not afraid of heights or… maybe it’s time to conquer the fear?), archery or canoeing (seasonal)
Please note we have tried and tested the tree surfing and the canoeing on the Tamar River from Cotehele both activities are fabulous fun and come highly recommended
Highly recommended restaurant serving delicious quality food. Farm shop and tea rooms planned to re-open in Spring 2023. We recommend checking the website as the restaurant and farm shop is new and in a progressive state of growth and change. Booking essential
Highly recommended for lunch, dinner, cocktails, drinks, coffee/tea or afternoon tea
The gardens extend to over 100 acres and were created by Sir Humphry Repton, one of our favourite places locally for all of the above… and our special occasion meals. We also love to stroll around the beautiful extensive gardens and woodland, it’s a real treat. Booking Essential
Provides a lovely night out in a beautiful rural setting with a choice of great pizzas and deserts, it’s a fun experience and highly recommended – check the website for available dates
Highly recommend for lunch and dinner and great cocktails too. Booking essential
Stunningly located this award winning local castle estate set on the banks of the Tamar river is well worth a visit. It’s an exquisitely beautiful house, with stunning gardens and grounds set on the banks of the Tamar River. Across the year they hold many events including afternoon tea, dinners, tours and summer theatre. It’s always worth checking their website to see what’s happening. Christmas time is lovely at Pentille with all sorts of festivities including wreath making workshops and carols in the courtyard
Tavistock is one of our favourite local places to visit and we tend to do our shopping here preferring to use the lovely independent and artisan shops dotted across the town. Make sure to walk up every street and alleyway, the town has more shops and places of interest on offer than you might first realise…
For food and drink, we recommend :
The historic Pannier Market is in the centre of the town, it’s a large undercover market set in a beautiful building with a variety of different stallholders that change across the days and weeks of the year, additionally the Butchers Hall just across from the market regularly has complimentary fairs, sales and exhibitions
There are plenty of independent and interesting shops around the market too and on the outside main entrance to the market there are usually stalls selling a variety of produce, clothes, plants etc.
The Town Hall opens up occasionally to hold antique and craft markets too so… if browsing around markets antiques, food, art and all sorts is thing, you’ll love this area of town
Eversfield Organic Farm shop – www.eversfieldorganic.co.uk we highly recommend this wonderful shop for groceries, it has an excellent selection of the very best organic quality food and drink
Reputedly where afternoon cream tea was invented, why not treat yourself to a Devon cream tea? On this side of the border they put the cream first, in Cornwall it’s done the correct way, obviously it should be jam first! Or… Why not try both ways? It actually tastes different so you can be the judge of which you prefer…
It’s another good place for breakfast, lunch or dinner with a decent menu. Booking recommended
This walk takes in the viaduct which carried the London and South West Railway trains from Exeter around the north western fringes of Dartmoor. The line closed in the late 1960s. Splendid views of Tavistock across to the tors of Dartmoor can be taken in from the viaduct walk a little further along from the viaduct you’ll find the original Tavistock Station Building – now in private ownership but well worth taking a look, as so much of the original building remains in tact
The walking route starts at Bedford Car Park, into Russell Street where you turn left onto West Street. Take the steps up Rocky Hill and turn right onto Watts Road. Continue past Madge Lane until you reach the entrance to the railway footpath
Once off the viaduct, where the road sharply bends to the right, take an almost hidden footpath on your left which skirts the old railway station. Continue along the foot/cycle path until it loops back onto itself and joins a residential Road. Turn left and continue downhill for 1 mile
Take some steep steps on your left and descend into Paddons Row
